The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an automatic tracking system used on vessels and by Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) to identify and locate vessels through electronically exchanging of data with other nearby ships, AIS base stations and satellites.

Carriage of AIS is required under regulations of Safety Of Life At Sea (SOLAS). The information automatically provided by AIS includes ship identity, type, position, course, speed, navigational status and other safety data.
